Crafting with Heart & Mud: The Journey
Wendy grew up surrounded by the hum of creativity- Her parents spent every spare moment outside their day jobs with clay on their hands. They were truly dedicated, building a gas kiln in the garage and fashioning a potter’s wheel out of an old motor and the baby bath shared by all four of their children! That wonderfully creative, "Heath Robinson" spirit led them to open their own gallery in their late 50’s , inspiring Wendy’s lifelong passion for this humble, muddy material.
Wendy formalised that early love for Ceramics at Derby College Of Higher Education acquiring a Higher National Diploma in 3D design and graduating with Distinction in Ceramics in 1990. Wendy was selected as a Student Member of The Craft Potters Association and went on to become a Fellow.
The Process & Materials
Today Wendy creates a blend of functional and non-functional ceramics, balancing thrown forms with hand-built pieces. Her choice of clay—whether smooth white earthenware, rich red earthenware, or textured grogged bodies—is dictated entirely by the character of the piece taking shape. Wendy Embraces a fluid process, trusting the clay from initial shape to final glaze.
